Viewing Guide

A complete Viewing Guide for Veiled Voices is now available for download. The viewing guide includes additional information about the film, how to get involved, and how to organize discussions around the film.

We also have a special Ramadan Viewing Guide as well for download.

Discussion Topics

After viewing the film, take some time to reflect on these questions.  You may find it helpful to jot down notes while the information is fresh in your mind.  These questions can also be used as a launching point for a dialogue on the issues of women and Islam investigated in this film.

General

  • How do the family situations differ for the three women and how does this affect their work?
  • Describe one scene that could be an example of roles shifting for women in leadership.
  • Does it seem these women are able to convince men of their roles as leaders?
  •  Would you agree with the statement that these women are neither conservative nor liberal?
  • Did any religious ritual you noticed in the film surprise you? What religious rituals do you practice yourself?
  • What teachings of Islam are mentioned in relation to marriage?
  • How does Huda's husband feel about her work? Would your significant other or family members feel the same way if you were a religious teacher?

Personal Reflection

  • Which, if any, of the characters do you most closely identify with and why?
  •  What did you learn from this film that you didn't know before? About Islam?
  • Which scene did you find the most compelling and why?
  • If you could ask any of the characters one question, who would you ask and what would the question be?
  • Can you think of an example of religious or gender-based discrimination that you have seen in your own community?
  •  Prior to the film when you thought about the role of Muslim women what did you picture? Did the film affirm or challenge these ideas?
